About this event
Ever wonder how plants get their Latin names—or why we don’t just use common names? Join Ersten Imaoka, the Ruth Bancroft Garden’s longest-standing docent, who has been sharing his knowledge and enthusiasm with visitors for more than 20 years! On this fun and fascinating tour, discover why botanists use scientific names, how to tackle those seemingly impossible botanical tongue-twisters, and how learning a plant’s name can actually help you recognize and remember what you’re looking at.
Along the way, we’ll uncover the stories, meanings, and clues hidden in plant names—and discover what “keiki” and “hijos” have in common. Come curious, leave knowing a little more about how to “speak plant”!
